New Technology in learning – Rich and Holtman

How does it come about?

• New tools become available
• Because it is thought to add value to students’ learning experience/learning process – fosters group work = facilitates learning
• To do different things (within the same field) / to add different opportunities, to learn different things (e-business/ international collaboration)
• Considered relevant to the subject being studied (for ex business)
• Seen as enabler of revolutionary change
• Seen as a way to encourage active learning and knowledge creation

Does it have to be useful?

Is it always disruptive?

• Some ss see the use of technology as a separate area which should not be mixed with the subject they are studying – gets in the way of main goals. This is what happened in L195
• Some ss don’t have the necessary skills This is what happened in L195
But it is worth persevering in the face of initial resistance

Does it lead to changes in practice?

• Encourages practices that generate active learning and knowledge creation Lots of training is needed
• Decentralises design/ ‘do it yourself approach’ (Wallis&Choi96)
